چکیده

An ocean general circulation model (oGCM) was used in concert with a global database of inert gas measurements (Ne, Ar, N2/Ar and Kr/Ar) to constrain the magnitude of bubble mediated air-sea gas flux. We illustrate the inverse method using a simple bubble model that includes two end member types of bubbles: small bubbles that completely dissolve, and larger bubbles that briefly are submerged and exchange gases with seawater. An inverse solution to the oGCM constrains the flux contribution for bubbles that completely dissolve as a function of wind speed. Our results indicate air injection values at high wind speeds (> 10 m s) that fall between two previous estimates which differ by a factor of three. Future improvements of the method demonstrated here but including seasonality should allow for better constraints on bubble mediated gas exchange as well as the ability to test the performance of a range of bubble models.

Sound Speed and Void Fraction Profiles in the Sea Surface Bubble Layer

Observational evidence indicates that the bubble layer beneath the sea surface may show either an exponential or an inverse-square sound speed profile down to depths greater than 10 m. An exponential profile is consistent with a model of gas transport in which the downwardflux is due to turbulent diffusion and the d@usion coeficient is independent of depth. In this paper, a theoretical model is...

Constraining global air - sea gas exchange for CO 2 with recent bomb 14 C measurements

[1] The CO2 released into the stratosphere during bomb testing in the early 1960s provides a global constraint on air-sea gas exchange of soluble atmospheric gases like CO2. Using the most complete database of dissolved inorganic radiocarbon, DI C, available to date and a suite of ocean general circulation models in an inverse mode we recalculate the ocean inventory of bomb-produced DIC in the ...

Structure-property Interaction in Flux Assisted Tungsten Inert Gas Welding of Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel SS304 grade was welded with active Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process by applying a flux paste made of SiO2 powder and acetone. SiO2 flux application improves the weld bead depth with a simultaneous reduction in weld bead width. The improvement in penetration results from arc constriction and reversal of Marangoni convection. Experimental studies revealed that t...

The role of bubbles during air-sea gas exchange

The potential for using the air-sea exchange rate of oxygen as a tracer for net community biological production in the ocean is greatly enhanced by recent accuracy improvements for in situ measurements of oxygen on unmanned platforms. A limiting factor for determining the exchange process is evaluating the air-sea flux contributed by bubble processes produced by breaking waves, particularly dur...

Atmospheric methane flux from bubbling seeps: Spatially extrapolated quantification from a Black Sea shelf area

[1] Bubble transport of methane from shallow seep sites in the Black Sea west of the Crimea Peninsula between 70 and 112 m water depth has been studied by extrapolation of results gained through different hydroacoustic methods and direct sampling. Ship-based hydroacoustic echo sounders can locate bubble releasing seep sites very precisely and facilitate their correlation with geological or othe...
